What is Cloudflare?

Cloudflare, founded in 2009 by Matthew Prince, Lee Holloway, and Michelle Zatlyn, is the internet's largest reverse proxy network — sitting between roughly 20% of all web traffic and the servers that host it. The company's infrastructure spans 310+ data centers in 120 countries, giving it a physical presence closer to most internet users than any hosting provider could achieve alone. Cloudflare's free tier is arguably the most generous product in all of web infrastructure: unlimited CDN bandwidth, DDoS protection, SSL certificates, DNS management, and basic bot mitigation — at zero cost. The paid tiers ($20/month Pro, $200/month Business, enterprise custom pricing) add WAF rules, image optimization, advanced bot management, and priority support. Among PI law firms, Cloudflare adoption sits at roughly 30%, making it the most common infrastructure technology after WordPress and PHP. For law firms, Cloudflare solves three problems simultaneously: speed (content served from the nearest edge location, not the origin server in a single data center), security (DDoS protection, bot blocking, and SSL without server configuration), and reliability (if the origin server goes down, Cloudflare can serve cached pages to visitors). The firm whose website loads in 1.5 seconds because Cloudflare serves cached content from a local edge node has a measurable SEO and conversion advantage over the firm whose site loads in 4 seconds from a single GoDaddy server in Arizona.

Common Use Cases for Law Firms

  • Speed up website delivery to visitors anywhere in the country
  • Protect against DDoS attacks and malicious traffic
  • Provide free SSL certificates for secure HTTPS connections
  • Block known malicious bots while allowing search engine crawlers
  • Improve site availability with global edge caching

Cloudflare Best Practices

1
Switch your DNS to Cloudflare even if you don't use anything else — it's the fastest public DNS on the internet. Cloudflare's DNS resolver (1.1.1.1) is consistently the fastest public DNS service, but that's the consumer product. When you move your domain's nameservers to Cloudflare's authoritative DNS, your site's DNS lookups become measurably faster for every visitor. DNS lookup time is the invisible tax on every page load — shaving 50-100ms off DNS resolution time improves the perceived speed of every click. This is free, takes 10 minutes, and benefits your site regardless of whether you use Cloudflare's CDN or security features.
2
Enable "Auto Minify" and "Brotli compression" in Speed → Optimization immediately after setup. Auto Minify strips unnecessary whitespace and comments from your HTML, CSS, and JavaScript files. Brotli compression (more efficient than gzip) reduces file transfer sizes by 15-25%. Both are one-click toggles in the Cloudflare dashboard, free on all plans, and produce immediate speed improvements. Most Cloudflare users never visit the Speed settings page — the defaults are conservative, not optimal.
3
Set your caching rules to cache static assets aggressively (30 days+) but HTML pages more conservatively (2-4 hours). Cloudflare's default caching is cautious — it caches images, CSS, and JavaScript but not HTML. For a law firm site that updates content weekly (not hourly), caching HTML at the edge for 2-4 hours means most visitors get an instant-loading cached page instead of waiting for your origin server to generate it. Create a Page Rule: URL pattern = yourdomain.com/* → Cache Level: Cache Everything → Edge Cache TTL: 2 hours. This single rule can cut your server load by 80% and make your site feel dramatically faster.
4
Turn on Cloudflare's "Under Attack Mode" if your site ever experiences a traffic spike from suspicious sources. Legal marketing occasionally attracts malicious traffic — competitor-funded DDoS attempts, bot-driven click fraud, or scraper swarms. Under Attack Mode presents a JavaScript challenge to every visitor for 5 seconds before allowing access. It's blunt (it slows down real visitors too), but it stops attacks immediately while you investigate. Toggle it off as soon as the attack subsides. Know where the button is BEFORE you need it: Security → Settings → Under Attack Mode.
5
Configure Cloudflare's Page Rules to bypass caching on admin pages and form submission endpoints. If you enable aggressive caching (per the rule above), you MUST exclude your WordPress admin (/wp-admin/*), login pages (/wp-login.php), and any form submission endpoints. Otherwise Cloudflare may serve cached versions of these dynamic pages — meaning form submissions fail silently, login redirects break, and admin changes don't appear. Create a Page Rule: /wp-admin/* → Cache Level: Bypass. This is the most common Cloudflare misconfiguration on WordPress sites.

Alternatives to Cloudflare

1
Sucuri — Security-focused CDN and WAF specifically popular in the WordPress ecosystem. Sucuri's malware scanning and cleanup service is better than Cloudflare's for WordPress-specific threats (compromised plugins, injected PHP backdoors). If your primary concern is security rather than speed, and you're on WordPress, Sucuri's $199/year Website Security Platform is more targeted. But Cloudflare's free tier provides 80% of the security benefits at 0% of the cost.
2
Amazon CloudFront — AWS's CDN, typically used when a site is already hosted on AWS infrastructure. CloudFront is more configurable than Cloudflare and integrates natively with other AWS services (S3, Lambda@Edge). The downside: no free tier for meaningful traffic, complex configuration (Lambda@Edge functions require coding), and no built-in bot protection without AWS WAF (additional cost). Only makes sense for firms with custom-built applications already running on AWS.
3
Fastly — The CDN that powers Shopify, Reddit, and the New York Times. Fastly's edge computing (Compute@Edge) and instant cache purging are best-in-class. But there's no free tier, pricing starts at $50/month, and setup requires more technical knowledge than Cloudflare. Relevant for large firms with custom web applications that need real-time cache invalidation. For a standard WordPress firm site, Fastly is overkill.
4
NitroPack — Not a CDN in the traditional sense, but an all-in-one WordPress speed optimization service that includes a CDN, caching, image optimization, and code minification. NitroPack ($21+/month) is easier to set up than Cloudflare for WordPress-specific optimization and often produces better PageSpeed scores because it handles WordPress-specific optimizations that Cloudflare can't (lazy loading, critical CSS extraction, font optimization). Best as a complement to Cloudflare, not a replacement — use both for maximum speed.

Cloudflare Power Moves

1
Use Cloudflare's free SSL certificate to upgrade your entire site to HTTPS without touching your server. If your law firm site still loads on HTTP (no padlock icon), Cloudflare's free Universal SSL certificate encrypts the connection between visitors and Cloudflare's edge. Enable "Always Use HTTPS" and "Automatic HTTPS Rewrites" in the SSL/TLS settings. Google has used HTTPS as a ranking signal since 2014, and Chrome labels HTTP sites as "Not Secure" — which is a terrible look for a law firm. This fix takes 2 minutes and requires zero server configuration.
2
Enable Cloudflare's "Email Address Obfuscation" to stop spam harvesters from scraping your attorneys' email addresses. Bots crawl law firm websites specifically to harvest attorney email addresses for spam and phishing. Cloudflare's free email obfuscation feature automatically replaces visible email addresses with JavaScript-decoded versions that bots can't parse but humans see normally. Enable it in Scrape Shield → Email Address Obfuscation. It's free, invisible to visitors, and dramatically reduces the spam volume your attorneys receive.
3
Set up Cloudflare's "Always Online" feature so your site stays visible even if your hosting server goes down. Always Online serves a cached version of your site from Cloudflare's edge if your origin server becomes unreachable. For a law firm, a 30-minute hosting outage at 2 PM on a Tuesday could mean 10-20 lost contact form opportunities. Always Online ensures visitors still see your pages (minus dynamic features like chat and forms) rather than a browser error page. Free on all plans, enable it in Caching → Configuration.
4
Use Cloudflare's Analytics (free) as a lightweight complement to Google Analytics. Cloudflare Analytics tracks visits server-side, without JavaScript — meaning it captures visitors who block tracking scripts, use ad blockers, or have JavaScript disabled. Compare Cloudflare's visitor count to Google Analytics: the gap represents your "invisible" traffic. On most sites, Cloudflare shows 15-25% more visitors than GA4, revealing the real scale of your traffic. This data is useful for content strategy and capacity planning even if GA4 remains your primary analytics tool.
5
Create a Cloudflare redirect rule to send your non-www domain to www (or vice versa) without server configuration. Having both www.yourfirm.com and yourfirm.com accessible without a redirect creates duplicate content — Google sees two copies of every page, diluting your SEO authority. In Cloudflare Rules → Page Rules, create a rule that 301-redirects one version to the other. Pick one canonical version (most PI firms use non-www), redirect the other, and never think about it again. Free, takes 60 seconds, and solves an SEO problem that plagues thousands of law firm sites.
